Band Audition Standards
BAND SCHOLARSHIPS AND BAND PARTICIPATION AUDITION STANDARDS
I. Level I Priority, Minimum Expectations
A. Letter of good standing from the high school director
B. Grade point average of at least 3.00 (B average or higher), regular admission to the University
C. Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument
D. Major Scales: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, Ab, E, B, Db, & Gb
E. Minor Scales: A, D, E, G, & C (Natural Minor)
F. Broken Chords and Thirds using the scales listed in items D and E
G. Prepared Material: Etude (Study) and/or Solo Grade 4 or higher
H. All 26 basic rudiments and melodic proficiency (percussion only)
I. Sight-reading
II. Level II Priority, Minimum Expectations
A. Letter of good standing from the high school director
B. Grade point average of at least 2.75 (C+ average or higher), regular admission to the University
C. Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument
D. Major Scales: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, Ab, & E
E. Prepared Material: Etude (Study), Solo, or a standard band selection (Pop tunes are unacceptable)
F. All 26 basic rudiments and melodic proficiency (percussion only)
G. Sight-reading
III. Level III Band Participation, Minimum Expectations (Non Scholarship)
A. Letter of good standing from the high school director
B. Grade point average of at least 2.50 (C average or higher)
C. Chromatic Scale: Two Octaves, Commencing on any given note
D. Major Scales: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, & Ab
E. Prepared Material: A standard band selection (Pop tunes are unacceptable)
F. All 26 basic rudiments and melodic proficiency (percussion only)
G. Sight-reading
Note:
- Minimum tempo for scales, chords, and thirds; Level I Priority, quarter note=96, Level II Priority, quarter note=88, and Level III, Band Participation, quarter note=60 using eight notes or sixteen notes
- All scales must encompass the practical range of the instrument. Scales must be tongued ascending and slurred descending
