Items Needed for “The Sonic Boom” Band Camp

(Very Important, please read)

It is required that you bring the following items to band camp.

A. Proof of admission or readmission–You must be officially admitted to Jackson State University before coming to band camp. For questions concerning your admission status, call (601) 979-2100.

B. A University Housing Contract (Permit)–If you plan to stay in the dormitory, you must have a University Housing Contract. For questions concerning you housing status, call (601) 979-2326.

C. Fifty ($50) band uniform rental fee–to be paid in the business office prior to the issuance of a band uniform. (The band staff will not collect money.)

D. Fifty ($50) rental fee for the use of University owned equipment–to be paid in the business office prior to the use of University owned equipment. (The band staff will not collect money.)

E. Intermediate, artist, or professional line instruments are required for participate in JSU’s band program. Therefore, students with beginning level instruments will not be permitted to participate in the band. The University usually provides the following instruments: Sousaphones, Tubas, Percussion Instruments, Euphoniums, Bassoons, Oboes (Symphonic Band), and Marching French Horns. Students are responsible for obtaining all other instruments. It is always best to have your personal instrument.

F. All sousaphone players must bring to band camp a neck, bits, and a mouthpiece to fit a King sousaphone

G. All trombone players must bring to band camp a Bach 6 ½ AL **mouthpiece or a comparable mouthpiece to band camp

H. All baritone horn players must bring to band camp two mouthpieces, a Bach 6 ½ AL.525 Bore and a Bach 6 ½ AL.560 Bore (Big Bore) *mouthpiece or comparable mouthpieces

I. Clarinet players must bring to band camp two boxes of number three 3 ½ Vandoren reeds

J. Saxophone players must bring to band camp two boxes of number three 3 Vandoren reeds

K. Percussion players must bring to band camp at least three pair of 3S drum sticks, a Ludwig leg rest, and a drum strap. Also, tenor drummers, bass drummers, and quad drummers must bring at least two pair of marching drum mallets

L. All trumpet players must bring to band camp a Bach 3C **mouthpiece or a comparable mouthpiece

M. Woodwind players maybe required to purchase a different mouthpiece upon reporting to band camp

N. Two pair of white shorts, a pair of black military oxford shoes, white T-shirt, white socks, athletic shoes, and a baseball cap

O. A portable wire music stand

P. Trumpet and trombone instrumentalists must bring a straight and cup mute to band camp

++Your applied instructor may require a different size mouthpiece.

Note: All students staying in University housing are required to have “A University Housing Contract.” If you have questions, please contact the housing office at (601) 979-2326. All meals will be provided by the University. In addition, students reporting to band camp must be prepared to stay for the semester.

Band members may be required to submit to a DRUG TEST. The NCAA requires all athletes to be subjected to random drug testing.
